2014 Festicámara in Medellin

It is well known that music lovers are all around the world and for this reason today’s review is dedicated to one of the most important music events of Medellin: Festicámara. It is an international chamber music festival that, despite being inaugurated just some years ago, it has positioned itself as one of the most outstanding annual events in Medellin, it is a meeting of national and international famous musicians where converge a wide variety of musics from different countries.

Colombia possesses a large wealth of music, every day in our homeland we are surrounded by the sounds of the vallenato and salsa, as well as by joropo, cumbia, pasillo, bambuco and currulao, to name just a few.  Each year, Festicámara is turned into an opportunity to listen to our traditional music without needing to cross the country, and this make of it, undoubtedly, an exceptional event, since it makes possible to get closer to the most distant regions and to its culture expressed in music.   Besides, it allows all those wanting to know the diversity of Colombia to live the experience of listening to the Colombian voices and watching those instruments that you seldom see in other countries.

In this year’s programme, Festicámara will perform, from April 11th to April 21th, nine free concerts, as well as some training activities: masterclasses, workshops and forums.  Concerts not to be missed! Totó La Momposina will be in the first day of the event, a Colombian singer and dancer that, to the sound of the drum immerses us in the Colombian history, in her indigenous, African and Spanish roots.  I do not exaggerate when I say this is a memorable occasion, this world-renowned artist is a treasure of our country and, as for me, she has assured audience.  But the Colombian music will not be the only main figure, we will also enjoy the music of artists from Costa Rica, Venezuela, Argentina, Spain, Holland and the United States.  Choral, tango, strings, woodwinds and brass concerts… I can hardly wait!!

For those who come from other cities and countries, the best thing is planning from now on where to stay in Medellin, bearing in mind it should be a central point from where you can easily move around the city and enjoy it without going very far.  One of the most famous places is El Poblado neighbourhood, there you will find the best hotels in Medellin, as well as the best restaurants, bars, cafés, and no end of plans, you will not want to leave it.  Very close, for example, it is situated the Modern Art Museum of Medellin, where two concerts will take place, and you will also have an easy access from there to the other venues of the city during these 10 days of music.  The Charlee Hotel is located in the heart of El Poblado, specifically in the Lleras Park, a perfect site if you want to enjoy the city from each place, you can take advantage of the stay to contemplate the art exhibitions displayed in every floor, savour the traditional food in its Lucía Restaurant or if you prefer, go up to the top floor and enjoy a wonderful view of Medellin and its mountains from The Charlee’s Envy Roof Top.
